About the project

Cases drag on, close when the statute of limitations runs out and get lost in the news flow. This directory records what official bodies and the media have already made public, and makes it searchable.

Presumption of innocence

Most people in the directory have no court verdict. Every episode carries the status of the proceedings — from notice of suspicion to a final verdict — and that status is shown wherever the episode is mentioned.

Acquittals and closures on exonerating grounds are published on equal terms with convictions. A record of an acquittal stays in the directory: quietly deleting it would look like a cover-up, and a public court decision is the only honest way to close the story.

Who runs it

The project is run by volunteers and journalists. Some team members work under pseudonyms — a necessary security measure, which we state openly rather than hide. Editorial decisions are taken by at least two people: no material is published by its author alone.
