Extortion and receipt of an undue advantage of USD 150,000 by a judge of the Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv

According to NABU (proceedings No. 52016000000000073), a judge of the Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv demanded and received an undue advantage (bribe) of USD 150 thousand (over UAH 3.7 million at the National Bank of Ukraine exchange rate at the time of the crime); on 9 August 2016 he was exposed, and part of the money was found buried in glass jars. Taking advantage of judicial immunity, he left for Moldova; in July 2021 he appeared in Vinnytsia Oblast and on 3 August 2021 was detained by NABU. On 15.11.2021 the indictment was sent to the HACC (Article 368(4) of the Criminal Code). On 14.06.2023 the HACC sentenced Mykola Chaus to 10 years' imprisonment with confiscation of property; on 03.04.2025 the Appeals Chamber of the HACC overturned the verdict and delivered a new one — 8 years and 6 months' imprisonment with confiscation of property and a three-year ban on holding judicial office (the appellate verdict enters into force upon pronouncement). According to the press service of the Appeals Chamber of the HACC, the appellate verdict entered into force upon pronouncement; it may be challenged in cassation.
