Extortion of USD 1.1 million for allegedly influencing decisions of the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Culture (2019)

According to investigators, in 2019 the Deputy Minister for Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons, together with an assistant, demanded USD 1.1 million from a representative of Katran K LLC for allegedly influencing a Supreme Court decision and the Ministry of Culture's approval of the reconstruction of the "Rybalka Market"; on 14 August 2019 they were detained upon receiving USD 480 thousand. On 23 February 2022 the HACC found Hrymchak guilty under Article 190(4), Article 27(4), Article 15(2), Article 369(3) and (4) of the Criminal Code, sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment with confiscation of property and ordered recovery of UAH 978,837.40 in property damage. According to the Register of Court Decisions, the verdict entered into force on 26 March 2022; Glavcom, citing SAPO, reported that on 19 December 2023 the Appeals Chamber of the HACC upheld the verdict. The episode amount is per the NABU announcement (USD 1.1 million).
